The sound of a small orchestra playing a light tune was out in the air as men and women in formal wear stood, spoke to one another and partook in hand-crafted treats. A formal get-together aboard a UNSC Space Station above the planet Reach was taking place. The occasion: a ceremony commemorating the Spartan IIs on another successful mission, the multi-manned team each received a medal of honor in their latest victory against the Covenant.
Of the many high-ranked officials attending, one of them was a 17 year old girl with blond hair held in a ponytail, wearing a black evening gown with matching gloves that went up her elbows. She stood with Her parents as they spoke to another ranked official, the shoulder insignia indicated a captain.
“I must say, these men and women are such grand soldiers” The mother said addressing him, “But, then again, what else should we expect from a team trained by the great Senior Chief Petty Officer Mendez?” she asked
“Agreed, Admiral LaCoste. He wouldn’t have trained any less, These Spartans are the best of the best because of him.” The captain answered.
The child sighed lightly, she was feeling bored of these conversations her parents did with the other ranked officials. The LaCostes always had strong ties to the UNSC, both her mom and dad were part of HIGHCOM, the highest operational command of the UNSC, and she was told over and over that someday she will take on the family responsibilities and be part of the UNSC as well. In fact, in another year, she was set to enter a Naval Officers academy and begin her training. Her parents already had planned her future out for her...but as she was getting older, she wasn’t sure if this was the life she wanted.
She politely got her parents attention as she asked, “Mother, Father, may I please be excused for a moment?”
“Of course, Evelyn dear, but make sure you hurry back” Her father said smiling.
Evelyn nodded before she began leaving, she didn’t know where to go, so she just walked. Passing by more high ranked officials gossiping and drinking champagne, waiters holding out trays of elegant finger foods, to which she took from one and ate, and decorations such as ice sculptures of the Spartans. The Spartans, the ones this party was for, she was fascinate by them, from what she gathered, they were an ONI project that were made to help fight the Covenant. Equipped with the high advanced armor, they were turning the tied of the war. She heard from gossip that the Spartans were originally created to deal with the Insurrection, but she wasn’t sure if she believed that.
As her focus was on her thoughts, she ends up running into something hard, she stumbles back and sees she has bumped into a large man with a short beard, wearing a military uniform.
“Oh gosh, I’m so sorry, I didn’t see where I was going” Evelyn apologized.
“Ah, no worries, young lady. Barely felt a thing” the man said, his accent was recognizably Hungarian, a language many people speak on the planet Reach.
Evelyn took a closer look at the man, “Hey...aren’t you one of those Spartans?” she asked “I recognized you during the ceremony”
The man smiled “Indeed I am. A nevem Jorge, Spartan-052” He introducing holding his hand out, he used a few Hungarian words for “my name is Jorge”
Evelyn took his hand and returned the greeting, “Evelyn LaCoste.”
“LaCoste? Any relation to Rear Admirals Joshua and Stella LaCoste?” Jorge asked.
“My parents” She admits with a blush of embarrassment on her cheeks, “my Dad’s an upper half while mom’s a lower half”
“Yes I remember them” Jorge said, “Will once made a joke about why he’s the ‘upper half’” he added with a smirk.
It took a moment for Evelyn to get the joke, she blushed again and held back a laugh as best she could, “That's terrible” she said between laughs.
Jorge chucked as well, “I know, only half of us actually got the joke.”
Evelyn composed herself and spoke, “I think I should thank you, I needed a good laugh after today.”
“Really? Is something troubling you?” Jorge asked, looking concerned.
“I don’t know if I should say” Evelyn said, turning away slightly.
“Well, you don’t have to tell me” Jorge told her, “but I’d hate to see a nice girl like you look sad.” He then gave a small smile, making her smile too.
two more soldiers, a man and woman, in military uniform appeared, they were not as big as Jorge but big enough to be identified as Spartans. “There you are Jorge” the woman said, “We wondered where you went of to.” That's when they noticed Evelyn, “Who is this?” She asked
“Evelyn LaCoste, daughter of the Admirals in HIGHCOM” Jorge introduce, “Evelyn, These are two of my fellow Spartan IIs. This is our Team's infiltration specialist, and one of the Fastest Spartans you'll ever meet, Kelly-087" Jorge said, introducing the woman Spartan. Evelyn looked impressed; before tonight, she didn't know some of the Spartans were girls. "And this is our Squad leader, Master Chief Petty Officer Spartan 117, John for short” He added with a smirk as he introduced the man. Evelyn was in awe at him, so this was the famous Master Chief her parents kept talking about.
“A pleasure to meet you, Miss LaCoste” John said.
Evelyn felt a bit star struck, “No need for formalities, Master chief, you and everyone else can call me Evelyn.”
“If you insist” John said.
“Wow, I can’t believe I’m actually meeting you. You’re like, Everyone’s hero... all of you.” Evelyn said, “My parents and their friends can’t stop talking about you.”
“Well, I don’t exactly feel like a hero” the Chief said.
The woman gave a laugh “He’s always been modest.”
“I’m serious, Kelly." John said
"I know you are" Kelly said, then she turned to Evelyn., "The men and women who fight along side us, the ones that don’t always make it back...they are the real heroes. We’re just doing our part to end the war.”
“Wow...that’s pretty profound.” Evelyn said, “But you can’t really help it that people think you are all heros, I mean you have the armor, the training...if I were a Spartan, I’d be able to do the things you guys can...but I’m not...”
“Having high-powered armor doesn’t make us Spartans, Evelyn” John said, “it’s the person.”
“He’s right” Jorge added “We were Spartans long before we got the armor.”
“So...you were all chosen to be Spartans” Evelyn asked.
“...You can say that” Kelly said, “And I meant what I said. We don’t do what we do because we have the proper equipment, because we want to be heroes, we do it because it needs to be done. And those men and women who join us in battle, they don’t stop just because they’re not like us, they keep fighting, despite not being like us, they have something we all are capable of: courage, and that makes a real hero.”
John gave a light smile at that, Jorge smiled as well as he said, “you always had a way with words, Kelly.”
"Just speaking the truth" Kelly said.
"Couldn't have put it better myself" John said. Kelly smiled back at him at that.
Evelyn couldn't help but sense something about the two. She was always very observant, she was able to catch subtle thing, things most people would miss, and at this moment, she noticed that Kelley's hands reached for John's and they were held for a short moment, it happened so suddenly, anyone else wouldn't have noticed. Evelyn felt that these Spartans, John and Kelly, had something going on between them. If she didn't know better, she could say that they were in love with one another, or were just really close as friends, but she was going with the former mostly, as she was a bit of a romantic.
“We should get going, the others wanted me to find you. The Admirals want another photo of us” John said to Jorge.
Jorge sighed and spoke an utterance in hungarian, sounding annoyed, “Alright, we don’t want to disappoint the brass.” He turns back to Evelyn, “Care to join us? I’m sure your parents will be there with the other Admirals.”
“That’s alright. I’d prefer to be out of the spotlight” Evelyn said, “But thank you all for the talk. It was nice to meet you three.”
“Always a pleasure” Jorge said, they shook hands again before the three left to join their fellow Spartans.
Evelyn saw them join other well dressed men and women, the rest of the Spartans. She had to admit, they did look like normal soldiers, but she knew they were more than that. She now knew that they were brave people, who would fight no matter what the circumstance were, even if they didn’t have their armor, they’d still fight, just like the brave men and women fighting right now on other planets. Maybe being in the UNSC wasn’t as bad as she thought, with people like the Spartans out there, there was hope for humanity...and there was hope for herself, that maybe she’ll get her chance to fight and show what she could do.
